UNH's McNally signs free-agent deal with Washington

The 2012 NFL draft came to a close. And the phone calls from the NFL teams began, at least for a couple of guys who played their college football in New Hampshire.

The University of New Hampshire's Brian McNally had an undrafted free agent deal with the Washington Redskins within an hour of the end of the draft on Saturday night and St. Anselm College wide receiver Marc Wilson was working on one with the Arizona Cardinals.

“You're getting to live your dream,” McNally said. “It's an exciting time.”

McNally, 6-foot-3 and 262 pounds, has been a disruptive force at defensive end through college, but the Redskins are looking at him as an outside linebacker.

The Cardinals showed the most interest in Wilson from last season on through the scouting process and on Saturday night they followed through on that interest and presented a verbal offer to his agent as the draft ended at about 7:20 p.m.

“The paperwork hasn't gone through,” Wilson said shortly after that. “Once it goes through and my agent looks it over, maybe by the end of the night — if the deal still stands — we'll take that one.”

The Cardinals were one of 28 NFL teams that stopped by St. Anselm to check him out, Wilson said, and visited four or five times.

The team's eastern regional scout, Don Corzine, called on Tuesday to make sure the Cardinals had a number that he could be reached at on Saturday.

After the draft, former UNH quarterback Kevin Decker was still hoping to hear from teams.

“I talked to my agent a little bit and he said don't get discouraged,” Decker said. “If you don't hear in a few days you've got to be worried, but you've got to be patient. I've got to stay positive and hope things change. But if they don't, it's not the end of the world.”

McNally heard from both the Redskins and the Denver Broncos during the seventh round and the Redskins were more aggressive in pursuing him.

“They seemed to want me the most and it seemed like the best fit,” he said.

He ended up talking to a couple of the Redskin coaches, including defensive coordinator Jim Haslett.

“One thing they said was they want me to be a rush end as well,” McNally said, “They want me to get after the passer and obviously contribute on special teams as well.”

Wilson, 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds, leaves St. Anselm with a pile of offensive records, including career receiving yards (2,149), receptions (211), touchdown receptions (17). He also ranks third in rushing yards (1,626).

He hopes to catch some passes, but knows that's not likely his route to a roster spot.

“I'm going to have to make a roster on special teams,” he said. “I'm not 6-foot-5, but I think I can bring a team versatility.”
