BRENTWOOD – Ex-Salem planning board member Jeffrey Gray was found guilty of raping a Queens, N.Y., woman on a single count of aggravated felonious sexual assault and cleared of seven other charges that included kidnapping.
The verdict for Gray, 50, means he faces up to 10 to 20 years in state prison.
Judge Marguerite Wageling revoked Gray's bail after the verdict which came just after 3:15 p.m. in Rockingham County Superior Court.
Wageling ordered the probation department to conduct a pre-sentence investigation within the next 45 to 60 days that will recommend a prison term to the court.
Gray offered no reaction as the jurors read their verdicts on the nine charges.
In addition to the felony, Gray was also convicted of a misdemeanor simple assault charge, which carries up to a one-year county jail term.
The jury found Gray not guilty of five felony counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault, a misdemeanor sexual assault and a single count of kidnapping.
Jurors sent a question to Wageling minutes before their verdict, appearing that they were at an impasse.
Moments later, they returned to Courtroom 6 with a decision.
Gray has been jailed since his arrest last March days after a pregnant Queens, N.Y., woman told police she was subjected to degrading sexual acts, beaten in the head, and ordered to act out a “Mommy and baby” sex fantasy.
Gray ordered the woman to put a diaper on him, and told the woman to act like “the Mommy,” according to court testimony. Police recovered adult-sized diapers and other baby paraphernalia at Gray's rented home in Windham. Gray was removed from his elected post to the town's planning board after his arrest.
Deputy County Attorney Tom Reid said the conviction showed that the jury believed the woman's testimony.
“She lived through a pretty difficult ordeal and the jury now has found the defendant guilty of raping her that evening,” Reid said. The attack happened on the night of March 8.
