Here is a great idea. Entering the second year of a “jobless recovery,” and just weeks after a dismal jobs report that indicated a slowing of an already sluggish economy, instantly make millions of young illegal immigrants eligible for work permits, thus vastly expanding the number of workers seeking a steadily shrinking number of jobs.

That is precisely what President Obama did on Friday when he announced that the federal government would not deport and would make eligible for work permits illegal immigrants between the ages of 16 and 30 who were brought to the United States before the age of 16, have no significant criminal record, and have a high school diploma or GED or have served honorably in the military.

Suddenly, the struggle to find work in Obama’s America just got even tougher.

How will the administration verify which illegals qualify for this temporary amnesty? They are “undocumented,” after all. How will this policy not encourage more illegals to slip over the border and claim to have been here — living with relatives who have utility bills and other records of residency — for years?

How is this even constitutional, as it is a sweeping change of legal status without an act of Congress? Answer: It is not, as Obama indicated last year when he explained to a Spanish-language TV station why he had not done it.

We are beginning to see just how far this President will go to cobble together enough votes to win reelection. What constitutional violation will he commit next? That will depend on how bad his poll numbers get in the next 20 weeks.
