WEARE — The second annual Tour for the Twins ride will be held July 21 in honor of Jack and Hunter MacKay, 4-year-old twins who suffer from a rare autoimmune disease.

Bikers will leave on their motorcycles from the Weare Dunkin’ Donuts on Stark Highway and travel about 100 miles, ending at an after-party in Goffstown.

The group will head north and west to Routes 202 and 9, going through Henniker, Stoddard, Newport and Bradford before making a loop back down Route 114 to Goffstown.

Money raised will go toward care for the twins who were born with Morquio syndrome, a disease marked by the body’s inability to produce certain enzymes.

Heather MacKay, the boys’ aunt, organized the fundraiser and said the support from the community is appreciated by the MacKay family.

“There were people who did the ride last year that I didn’t even know,” she said.

The first year of fundraising included a silent auction, but Heather said fundraising efforts eventually expanded to include the ride.

“We have a lot of friends who have motorcycles and everyone was asking what they could do,” she said.

Last year’s ride raised about $2,500 for expenses not covered by insurance, and the money raised was used toward a double stroller that would accommodate the boys’ combined weight. While the boys are able to walk with the help of walkers, longer treks are difficult without one.

“I guess you would call them stable,” said mom Alison, as far as the boys’ health is concerned.

“They’ve each had two major surgeries,” she said, and noted that they tire easily.

Allison had to quit her job because of the level of care the boys need, and the number of doctor visits they require. “The money is used for things that insurance won’t pay for,” she said.

“It’s very emotional for us, because it’s life-threatening disease,” she added.

Heather said she’s seen an improvement in the boys over a year ago.

“They’re pretty typical 4-year-olds,” she said. “They have amazing attitudes for all they’ve been through.”
