Call-up Ciriaco helps Sox to split with Yankees
BOSTON — Pedro Ciriaco’s three-run double in the sixth inning gave the Red Sox a two-run lead as they held on to beat the Yankees, 9-5, in the nightcap to earn a split of their doubleheader at Fenway Park on Saturday.
The Yankees again jumped out to a quick lead against the Red Sox as Mark Teixeira hit a three-run home run off Sox left-hander Felix Doubront in the first inning.
The blast scored Derek Jeter, who reached and took second when Red Sox third baseman Mauro Gomez was charged with two errors on the same play. Jeter took third when Curtis Granderson safely reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt, setting up Teixeira’s 15th home run of the season.
The Yankees have scored 12 runs in the first inning of the first three games of the four-game series — five Friday night, four Saturday afternoon, along with three in the nightcap.
The Sox got a run back in the third. Gomez led off with a double to left off Yankees starter Phil Hughes. Gomez took third when Ciriaco reached safely on a sacrifice bunt attempt, and scored when Daniel Nava grounded into a double play.
The Sox cut the lead to one run in fifth. With one out Ciriaco singled and took third when Nava reached on an error by right fielder Darnell McDonald, who was claimed last week after Boston put him on waivers. Ciriaco scored on Nick Punto’s sacrifice fly. But after David Ortiz singled, Jarrod Saltalamacchia struck out to end the threat.
The Sox batted around in the sixth. Adrian Gonzalez led off with a single and Cody Ross reached on an error by Derek Jeter. With one out, Gomez singled to load the bases for Ciriaco’s double into the left field corner.
Ciriaco, who was called up before Friday’s game and made his Red Sox debut in the first game of the doubleheader, went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, three RBIs, and a double.
The Yankees got a run back in seventh as Andruw Jones led off with a home run, his 10th of the season.
The Sox batted around again in the seventh, scoring four runs. Adrian Gonzalez led off with a double off reliever Boone Logan. Cory Wade entered to pitch and gave up a one-out double to Ryan Sweeney, scoring Gonzalez. Sweeney scored on Gomez’s double. Mike Aviles, pinch-running for Sweeney, scored when Ciriaco reached and took second on third baseman Jayson Nix’s fielding error. With Daniel Nava batting, Ciriaco stole third and scored on catcher Russell Martin’s throwing error.
Eric Chavez’ seventh solo home run off Sox closer Alfredo Aceves in the ninth completed the scoring.
Doubront earned the win, improving to 9-4 with a 4.41 ERA. He went 6 1/3 innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on four hits and a walk, with six strikeouts and two home runs.
Hughes took the loss, falling to 9-7 with a 4.33 ERA. He went 5 1/3 innings, giving up five runs, three earned, on 10 hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
The Yankees won the first game of the doubleheader 6-1, scoring all their runs on home runs. Nick Swisher hit a three-run shot in the first followed by Andruw Jones’ solo shot. In the fourth, Jones led off with his second home run of the game followed by Jayson Nix’s home run. It was the fourth and fifth times this season the Yankees have hit back-to-back home runs.
Freddy Garcia earned the win, improving his record to 3-2 with a 5.23 ERA. He went 6 2/3 innings, giving up one run on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Franklin Morales took the loss for the Red Sox, falling to 1-2 with a 3.50 ERA. He went 3 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts, four home runs, and a hit batter.
Yankees 6, Red Sox 1 (First game)
BOSTON — On the strength of four home runs, including two solo shots by Andruw Jones, the Yankees beat the Red Sox, 6-1, in the first game of their split doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park.
The Yankees got on the scoreboard quickly. Derek Jeter opened the game with a single to center field off Red Sox left-hander Franklin Morales. With two outs, Morales hit Robinson Cano with a pitch. The next batter, Nick Swisher, hit his 13th home run of the season, scoring Jeter and Cano. One batter later, Jones hit his eighth homer of the season on the ninth pitch of his at-bat.
“You get a big three-run homer from Swish after they get the second (out), they have two outs, and that’s a big hit,” said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. “And then Andruw adds on to it. You want to be able to do that, you want to be able to send your starting pitcher out with a lead if you can.”
That was appreciated by Freddy Garcia, making just his sixth start in 16 appearances this season.
“It’s nice,” Garcia said. “Get a lead early, four or five runs, just got out go out there and shut it down and that’s what I did.
“I’m glad I did my job and saved the bullpen.”
Morales struggled with fastball command, and after hitting Cano with a pitch, seemed to struggle with his tempo.
“His fastball kept moving in over the middle of the plate to right-handed hitters,” said Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine. “He couldn’t control it.”
Morales said, “I was just throwing my pitches and missing. I missed with my fastball and they hit homers.
“I tried to make my pitches. You know, my control, it’s going to happen.”
Swisher’s home run snapped an 0-for-17 skid.
The Yankees added two runs in the fourth when Jones and Jayson Nix opened the inning with back-to-back home runs. Then, with one out, Chris Stewart reached on a fielding error by third baseman Mauro Gomez, ending Morales’ outing with right-hander Justin Germano entering.
The last time the Yankees hit two sets of back-to-back home runs was Aug. 22, 2008, at Baltimore.
“Like I’ve always said, this team’s designed to hit home runs,” Swisher said. “That’s kind of our thing. Everyone talks about hitting with runners in scoring position and stuff like that. Well, I don’t know how I feel. But you hit 200 home runs a year as team, I think that’s going to score you an awful lot of runs.”
Making his Red Sox debut, Germano, who was called up July 4, held the Yankees scoreless over 5 2/3 innings, giving up five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
“He did exactly what he was doing at Triple-A,” Valentine said. “I’m glad it translated here.”
Morales entered the game having allowed just two home runs in 43 innings this season. He gave up four in three-plus innings against the Yankees. Morales took the loss, dropping his record to 1-2 while his ERA rose from 2.51 to 3.50.
Yankees starter Freddy Garcia kept the Sox bats quiet through the first three innings, facing one batter over the minimum, after a walk to David Ortiz in the first. But the Sox got to him in the fourth, when Gomez’s single scored Ortiz, who singled and went to second on Adrian Gonzalez’s single. But Garcia got Ryan Kalish to ground into a double play, ending the Red Sox rally.
