Officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the drowning death of a Nashua man in Sandy Pond on Saturday.

“It's just a tragic, accidental drowning,” said Nashua Police Sgt. Kerry Baxter who classified the death as non-suspicious.

Jay Coocen, 29, was pronounced dead at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, police said. His last known address was The Mission, 40 Chestnut St.

His death will be ruled a drowning, said Sgt. Baxter, while the investigation continues into the circumstances surrounding the drowning. Coocen, who was swimming with Jessie Theriault, 24, appeared to have trouble in the water and went under around 2:18 p.m. on Saturday.

Theriault, who has no fixed address but also listed The Mission as his home, made it to shore. He was arrested at the scene and charged with obstructing government administration and criminal threatening, said Sgt. Baxter.

A police officer, Theriault and a bystander went into the water and located Coocen, who was brought to shore on the Pine Street side of the pond, where ambulance personnel were waiting.

Deputy Fire Chief Michael O'Brien said Coocen was unresponsive when he was pulled from the water, and emergency workers tried to resuscitate him.

O'Brien said the pond, which is south of Route 111, covers 3 to 4 acres.

The death is being investigated by members of the Nashua Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division, the Nashua Police Department Uniform Field Operations Bureau along with the State Medical Examiner's Office and the Department of Safety's Marine Patrol Unit.
