Propane leak prompts evacuation at Wolfeboro inn
WOLFEBORO — A leak from a propane gas tank led to evacuation of a downtown inn on Thursday afternoon.
According to Wolfeboro Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Tom Zotti, no one was injured, but the Inn on Main Street was evacuated and North Main Street was closed for a time during a propane leak.
Wolfeboro Fire-Rescue was alerted to the incident at the Inn on Main, 200 North Main St., at 3:07 p.m. First arriving crews found an active leak from one of two 500-gallon propane tanks behind the Inn. The Inn was evacuated and a hose stream was directed at the tank to cool it.
A water supply hose was laid across North Main Street from a nearby hydrant, and the road was shut down for just over an hour, with traffic detoured via Old Lakeview Terrace and Forest Road.
Technical assistance was received from Eastern Propane. Technicians were able to secure the leak at 4:26 p.m.
Tuftonboro Fire-Rescue, Stewarts Ambulance and the Wolfeboro Police Department assisted Wolfeboro Fire-Rescue at the scene. Inn on Main Street staff reopened the inn shortly after 5 p.m.
“Inn staff should be commended for their quick thinking and action,” said Zotti.
“They realized they had an emergency and immediately called 911 and began evacuating the facility,” Zotti said.
The cause of the incident remains under investigation, but appears to be the result of a faulty relief valve on the tank.
