DEA joins investigation into Windham home invasion
WINDHAM — The DEA is assisting Windham with the investigation into a Wednesday morning home invasion.
Windham Police contacted the agency after finding paraphernalia and other evidence in the basement that could have been used to package and resell marijuana, according to Capt. Michael Caron of the Windham Police Department. He would not comment on the amount of material found but said police were able to get a search warrant based on that evidence.
The DEA is routinely called in on such cases because they have the resources to assist with evidence testing and investigation, Caron said.
“They’re more of a tool and a resource,” Caron said.
The investigation began around 7:45 Wednesday morning when a woman with a small child entered a Lowell Road yard asking for help. When officers arrived, the woman reportedly told them that armed men were assaulting her boyfriend in her home at 59 Bear Hill Road, according to police. The house sits on the end of a cul-de-sac in a quiet residential neighborhood.
The suspects had left the home when officers arrived and the man was not injured, police said.
Alerts released along the coast for three to four Hispanic men driving a silver Chrysler 300 sedan with Florida license plates have not turned up any leads, Caron said. The alerts went out Wednesday morning shortly after the incident was reported.
Police said they believe the house was specifically targeted, although the couple told officers they didn’t know the assailants. The people living in the home are not the property owners. Town records list the home owners as Charles J. and Caren D. Korabek, whose current address is in Oregon. The names of the people renting the home have not been made available by police.
The investigation is ongoing, Caron said.
This is second crime of this nature in Windham during the last three months. Two men allegedly tied up a woman during an invasion of her Glance Road home in April. A Massachusetts man was arrested in connection with that crime.
