Gas leak leads to evacuation in Durham

DURHAM — More than 100 construction workers were evacuated from the Cottages of Durham construction site Thursday morning after a gas line was breached.

Durham Fire Chief Corey Landry said workers drilling a hole for a fence post broke through a three-inch gas line. He said it was a new gas line for the massive student housing project and had nothing to do with nearby Goss Manufacturing.

“That is a good-sized gas line,” Landry said.

As a result, fire crews evacuated the 100 to 120 workers on site at the time as a precaution.

Landry said Unitil was already on site doing work and quickly shut off the gas.

The call came in at 11:19 a.m. and by noon, workers were being let back on site. Technology Drive, which had been closed at either end, was re-opened.

The line was repaired by 2 p.m., Unitil spokesman Alec O’Meara said.
