RUMNEY -- Close to 90 volunteers and professional searchers fanned out around the hills and streams above and below Stinson Lake Friday for the third day of searching for a missing man.

Hugh Armstrong, age 72, of Clayton, North Carolina has been missing since he left for a walk from Hawthorne Village in Rumney at about 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 25.

Volunteers are being encouraged to come help search Saturday through the dense, wooded, rough terrain for the man.

A meeting is planned and line search teams will be formed at 8 a.m. at the north end of the lake, at a staging area set up at White Mountain Ranch, if Armstrong is not found by then.

Seven groups of about 10 searchers - each included conservation officers or troopers - were looking in streams a further distance from the lake than had been previously searched.

N.H. Fish and Game Conservation Officers, N.H. State Police, local fire department personnel and two canine search teams were out Friday. The American Red Cross is on hand providing food and comfort to the searchers.

Members of Armstrong's family have arrived and are actively searching with the teams.

Officials said there is hope that the conditions in the woods since Wednesday are survivable and that Armstrong can find both food and water at this time of year.

Several searchers have been stung by bees and one suffered an injury on a rock, Friday.

Armstrong told his family he was going for a walk around the lake and would be home by 9 a.m. The walk is about five miles and he is considered in good health and a frequent walker.

Armstrong is 5 feet, 4 inches tall and weighs 175 pounds. He has brown-gray hair, gray eyes, and wears glasses. He is thought to be wearing a white Red Sox hat, a red or blue t-shirt, and shorts.

Updates will be posted on the N.H. Fish and Game website at http://www.wildnh.com.
