Suicide survivors host support gathering in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH — Those who have lost a loved one to suicide suffer a unique and isolating type of loss. Even though suicide rates continue to rise, the topic of suicide is still often taboo.

The Portsmouth Police Department, who are often called to assist in suicide prevention, or to investigate deaths by suicide, as well as the Seacoast Suicide Prevention Coalition, are hosting an evening for people who have suffered this unique type of loss to come together for a panel and small group discussions.

The evening is titled “Yes to Life.”

Police Chief David “Lou” Ferland, Police Chaplin Bob Jon of the First United Methodist Church in Portsmouth, a social worker and a “suicide survivor” will bring their stories and perspective.

A “suicide survivor” is someone who has lost a loved one to suicide.

After the panel discussion, attendees will have the chance to ask questions. Small group sessions will follow to give people a chance to share their own stories if they choose.

The evening is being held on Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church on Miller Avenue in Portsmouth.
