Head-on crash injures three in Salem
SALEM – A head-on collision on Bluff Street sent two adults and a child to the hospital.
On Wednesday, July 25, police and fire personnel were called to Bluff Street near Scotland Avenue around 3:41 p.m. for an accident involving a 2000 Honda Civic and a 1997 Chevy Astrovan, according to Sgt. Joel Dolan of the Salem Police Department.
Both drivers were taken to Lawrence General Hospital in Massachusetts with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries, Dolan said.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the Civic, driven by Shaemali Tilleke, 35, of Salem, was traveling east on Bluff Street when it crossed the center line and struck the Astrovan driven by Kazimierz Sulkowski, 81, of Hudson, Dolan said.
Tilleke was traveling with a child that appeared to be about 2 years old, according to Capt. Tim Kenney of the Salem Fire Department. The boy was properly restrained and did not appear to be injured, Kenney said, but he was transported to the hospital as a precaution.
The driver's side door of Tilleke's car was jammed in the accident so firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free her from the car, Kenney said. The procedure took about 15 minutes, he said.
“She appeared to be stable with no complaints of any injuries,” Kenney said.
Tilleke was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, Kenney said. He did not know if Sulkowski was wearing a seatbelt.
Both vehicles received significant damage and were towed from the scene. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the accident, Dolan said.
The incident remains under investigation by the Salem police.
