Nashua residents to take to the streets for Night Out event
NASHUA — Neighborhoods throughout the city are being invited to join forces with communities nationwide in a massive effort to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.
The 29th annual National Night Out event will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Nashua Boys and Girls Club, 47 Grand Ave.
“This event is to help reinforce the sense of community here in Nashua, and the main goal is for neighbors to get to know their neighbors and really look out for each other,” said Ed Lecius, community policing coordinator.
In the past, several hundred people have attended National Night Out in Nashua, and Lecius hopes this year is no exception.
“We have 30 crime watch groups in Nashua, and they are helping to spread the word and invite families,” he said.
Nationwide, more than 37 million people are expected to participate in America's Night Out Against Crime, which is being supported locally and nationally by Target and the National Association of Town Watch.
Along with heightening crime and drug prevention awareness, the event is also designed to generate support and participation in local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and community partnerships and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and working with local law enforcement agencies, according to Lecius.
Numerous activities will take place throughout the evening, including a cookout, police and fire demonstrations, games, sidewalk chalk, crafts, face painting and also a give-away of two bicycles.
The highlight of the evening will be a street hockey game or softball game between the Nashua Police Athletic League and members of the Boys and Girls Club. Information about the city's safe neighborhoods initiative and a presentation by members of Nashua's GREAT anti-gang program will also be available.
Fingerprint identification cards are often available, along with DNA kits for children, which helps police in case a child is missing or abducted.
Residents nationwide are being asked to lock their doors, turn on their outside lights and spend the evening with neighbors and police on Tuesday.
