It was a hot time at the old fair

SWANZEY — From the midway to the grandstand, it was a hot and humid time at the Cheshire Fair on Saturday.
Midway workers were beating the heat by pouring water on each other head's, while young mother Kristin Wilber of Keene wouldn't let her 3-year-old enter the funhouse again until the little girl took a sip from a big drink cup.
But the hot day was not going to cut the family's fair fun short, Wilber said. It's all about staying hydrated, Wilber and her husband said.
The agricultural section of the fair was just past the midway.
This year's theme, “Hoe Down to Earth at the Cheshire Fair,” is a nod to agriculture, the heart of the 74-year-old fair.
Novice 4-H competitor Bailey Fisher, 10, of Chesterfield and his calf “Montreal” took first place in the Jersey Spring Calf division of the 4-H Dairy Show.
“Around here, Cheshire Fair is the big fair” for 4-H members, said Cindy Guiltinan, Fisher's grandmother.
Waiting to compete, 9-year-old Sage Stark of Charlestown and her Jersey fall yearling “Annabelle” nudge each other back and forth.
“She's grown up with these guys, the cows,” said Stark's mother.
Nearby, equestrians were primping themselves and their horses to compete in the horse show.
“It's definitely the biggest (horse show) in the area,” said Keene-based Miracles in Motion horse trainer Michelle Castor.
The fair, located at 247 Monadnock Highway/Route 12, started Wednesday and continues through today.
Today's events include the 4-H Poultry Show, a woodsmen competition, goat milking at the Farm Fun Barn, an oxen pull and a kids' cupcake eating contest.
Today's grandstand show is a crowd favorite, the demolition derby. Tickets for that event are $7. Other highlights of the fair, are the daily shows, Victoria Circus and Canines in Flight.
The circus show includes three acrobats performing death-defying feats on a high wire more than 30 feet in the air, motorcycle daredevils and, of course, clowns.
In Canines in Flight, rescue dogs take center stage and perform various tricks.
General admission to the fair is $10 and free for children under 4. Tickets for children five to 11 are $5. Senior citizens tickets area $6.
