Fisher Cats blank Akron, 3-0, to end road trip
Toronto hurler Brandon Morrow will be making his second Eastern League rehab start Tuesday when the New Hampshire Fisher Cats open a six-game homestand against the Binghamton Mets at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
Sunday, the Fisher Cats concluded their road trip with a 3-0 win against host Akron at Canal Park. Yohan Pino (7-7) gained the win with a two-hitter in six scoreless innings. He walked three and fanned five.
On June 11 against the Washington Nationals in Toronto, Morrow left the game after throwing just nine pitches with a left oblique strain. Two days later, the 27-year-old righthander, who was traded to the Blue Jays by Seattle in 2009, was placed on the disabled list. Morrow was the fifth overall pick of the Mariners in the 2006 amateur draft.
In 13 game starts with Toronto this season before his injury, Morrow was 7-4 with a 3.01 ERA. He fanned 67 batters and walked 24 in 77-2/3-innings. In this career with Toronto, Morrow is 28-22 with a 4.31 ERA.
Morrow made two rehab starts with Single-A Dunedin before getting transferred to New Hampshire last week.
In his first rehab start with the Fisher Cats last Wednesday against Erie at Jerry Uht Park in Erie, Pa., Morrow allowed two runs and three hits in five innings. Morrow threw 51 pitches, 33 for strikes.
If everything goes well for Morrow Tuesday in his outing against the Mets (7:05 p.m. start), the Blue Jays are expected to recall the righthander later this week.
Sunday against Akron after Pino departed the game, Ron Uviedo, Chorye Spoone and Trystan Magnuson finished off the Fisher Cats’ first shutout since June 6. Magnuson earned his second season save.
John Tolisano, who had two solo homers against Erie last Wednesday, hit his ninth homer against Akron to give New Hampshire a 1-0 fourth inning lead.
The Fisher Cats (48-73) tacked on another run in the sixth inning as Brad Glenn singled home Kevin Howard.
New Hampshire gained an insurance run in the seventh inning when Jake Marisnick tripled and scored when Kevin Howard reached on a wild pitch on a strikeout.
