Derry planners approve signs for Walmart tenants

DERRY — With final preparations under way for the opening of the new Super Walmart on Ashleigh Drive on Sept. 12, the Planning Board approved signs for two tenants who will be operating out of the new store.

“When Walmart was approved, it was indicated that there were going to be some new tenants, including Subway and Service Credit Union,” said Planning Director George Sioras. “The requirement was that they would come back and show us the sign locations (for the tenants).”

The two new signs will be on the facade of the building near the driveway entrance to the new store.

During the Planning Board hearing on the signs, Chairman David Granese asked if the in-store Subway location meant the current Subway on Manchester Road would be closing.

“The current Subway will remain open,” said Subway representative Derek Ferraro. He said the Walmart location will generate its own customers, including many who will be making impulse buys at the restaurant.

A similar situation with a Walmart and a nearby standalone Subway has worked out well in Hooksett, Ferraro said.

The Subway will be open to the public when the new Super Walmart is scheduled to open on Sept. 12.

According to Town Administrator John Anderson, Walmart is working on finding a tenant or selling its current location on Manchester Road.
