Goffstown business rallies to raise money for baseball league

GOFFSTOWN — A local business owner is doing his part to raise money for the Goffstown Babe Ruth baseball league, after its storage barn was destroyed by a fire Aug. 4.

The building, along with all of the league's equipment, was destroyed in the late afternoon blaze that was caused by a lightning strike.

John and Patti Putnam, who own Putnam's Waterview restaurant and Sawyer's Main Street Breakfast, will host a spaghetti supper fundraiser Aug. 29.

John Putnam said the event will include raffles, door prizes and a pasta dinner and dessert table.

It's one of several fundraisers planned by organizations in town, said Kevin Baines, president of the league.

“There are a lot of individual groups doing things,” he said, including the Putnam's fundraiser and a benefit breakfast at the Odd Fellows Hall Sept. 2.

The league plans to host its own fundraiser at Southern New Hampshire University sometime in October.

Putnam, whose sons play Babe Ruth baseball, said when he heard about the fire, he immediately wondered how he could help.

“I was just struck by the tragedy,” Putnam said. “It just hit me right in the heart.”

The league will also receive up to $20,000 from Youk's Kids, a charity founded by former Red Sox player Kevin Youklis.

“That certainly took us by surprise,” Baines said.

The league has furnished a list of equipment needs to the foundation, and hopes to know by mid-September what will be purchased.

Baines said he is not entirely sure of what the next course of action will be, though it will likely involve the construction of a smaller storage shed.

“Once that's done, we can step back and catch our breath,” he said.

For a nonprofit organization in tight economic times, Baines said replacing the 1,000-square-foot building will be tough.

“To put up a larger building will take a lot of funding,” he said. “It really takes some big donors to get behind a project like that.”

In the meantime, locals are willing to step forward and help out, even the players themselves, Baines said.

Putnam said he hopes the community will rally and do whatever it can for an organization that has done so much for its children.

“It's not huge, but it's something,” Putnam said. “We have the space to do it, and I hope others will see what we're doing and figure out a way to help, too.”

Tickets for the spaghetti dinner are available at Putnam's Waterview, Sawyer's and Goffstown Ace Hardware.
