Man arraigned for alleged assault, restraint of woman

MANCHESTER — Corey Kimball, 26, of 33 Dixwell St., pleaded innocent Monday in Circuit Court-Manchester District Division to charges of simple assault and false imprisonment. Police allege he punched his girlfriend in the face and stood in front of the door, blocking her exit, and held the door closed.

The alleged victim, who brought two infants in a stroller to the arraignment session and told police she wanted Kimball to see her two black eyes and other injuries, is the same woman Kimball was convicted last December of stalking and threatening. Kimball has a deferred sentence hearing on that Dec. 20 conviction.

Judge William Lyons set bail at $5,000 cash/surety, half the amount the prosecutor requested. Trial was set for Nov. 28.

Low bail may not help

Andrew Santiago, 23, of 127 English Village Road, pleaded innocent Monday in Circuit Court-Manchester District Division to charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Santiago is accused of attempting to gain entry to Club Drynk on Old Granite Street Sunday after being told several times to leave, and of struggling with a police officer seeking to handcuff him.

Police prosecutor Steven Mangone requested bail of $2,000 cash/surety, but Santiago asked for lower or personal recognizance bail, saying he is supposed to start a new job.

Judge William Lyons set bail at $1,000 cash/surety, but told Santiago the bail doesn't become effective unless the 72-hour probation hold is lifted. Santiago is on probation in connection with a violent 2007 robbery in which Santiago stole a necklace, watch and cash from a Candia man and punched him in the face, while a companion held a gun on the victim.

Will hire own lawyer

Douglas S. Kaffel, 29, of 358 Smyth Road, Monday told Circuit Court-Manchester District Division Judge William Lyons that he will hire his own lawyer.

Kaffel was arraigned on a felony charge of second-degree assault that alleges attempted strangulation of his girlfriend and a misdemeanor charge of simple assault that accuses him of grabbing the woman in the upper waist and rib area and pushing her onto a bed.

Kaffel could enter no plea to the felony charge, so a probable cause hearing was set for Sept. 19. Trial on the misdemeanor was set for Dec. 4. Bail was continued at $5,000 cash/surety with conditions that bar contact with the victim, going to her residence or consuming alcohol.

Additional charges filed

Paul Barr, 51, of 135 Amory St., was arraigned Monday in Circuit Court-Manchester District Division on additional charges from an incident Aug. 16.

Barr pleaded innocent Friday to misdemeanor charges of simple assault and obstructing the report of a crime in connection with the incident at the residence of his girlfriend on Varney Street and trial was set for Nov. 27. Bail was set at $1,000 cash/surety.

Monday, Barr was back in court for arraignment on felony charges of reckless conduct and criminal threatening. The reckless conduct charge alleges he lunged at the woman and grabbed a knife and during the struggle, and cut her shirt and scratched her. The threatening charge alleges he threatened her while holding an aluminum bat over his head.

At his arraignment Friday, Barr told Judge William Lyons that the woman was “slapping me upside the head.” He insisted: “I haven't put my hands on anybody.” He also said he is not well. “I can't hardly stand up,” he said.

At his arraignment Monday, Barr said: “I can't even protect myself.” He could enter no plea to the felonies in Circuit Court, so a probable cause hearing was set for Sept. 4.

Police prosecutor Steven Mangone requested $10,000 cash/surety bail, saying Barr has criminal records in Missouri, Illinois and Massachusetts that include burglary, a drug offense and assault and battery on a child. Mangone said a charge of failure to register as a sexual offender has been bound over to the Hillsborough County North Grand Jury. Lyons set new bail at the requested $10,000 cash/surety.
