MANCHESTER — An adult Manchester resident is the first person in the state to test positive for West Nile virus, the mosquito-borne illness that has been found in insect populations in southern portions of the state, state health officials said.

Officials announced the infection today and said it was confirmed by the New Hampshire Public Health Lab.

The last human case was two years ago, in September 2010. It is the fifth such case since 2000.

“Fortunately this individual has recovered from this infection,” said state Public Health Director Dr. José Montero. However, the virus has been connected to 41 deaths in other parts of the United States this year, he said.

He urged people take steps to prevent mosquito bites.
