NH College Roundup: FPU, SNHU gird for baseball tourney

Franklin Pierce University will host Merrimack College in the first round of the Northeast-10 baseball championship on Tuesday in Rindge at 7 p.m. Merrimack clinched a berth with a 9-1 win Sunday against Stonehill.

Bentley University, the second seed in the tournament, will host third-seeded Southern New Hampshire University Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Marty Dunlap's two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning led the Ravens past No. 19 nationally ranked Southern New Hampshire on Saturday night at Penmen Field.

The win, combined with a 3-1 loss by Bentley on the road at Massachusetts Lowell, allowed Franklin Pierce to lay claim to the Northeast Division title, as well as the division's top seed.

Franklin Pierce wrapped up the regular season at 32-15 (22-6 Northeast-10, 15-6 Northeast Division), while SNHU fell to 32-15 (16-12 Northeast-10, 13-8 Northeast Division).

Columbia 6-12, Dartmouth 5-5: In New York Saturday, Columbia captured the best-of-three Ivy League baseball championship series and earned an NCAA regional berth. Columbia scored six runs in the seventh inning for its 12-5 clinching win. Gus Craig had a walk-off single in the 10th inning for the Lions' 6-5 win.

For Dartmouth (32-9) Jeff Keller had a two-run homer and Dustin Selzer (double) and Ryan Toimil (single) added RBI hits. Dartmouth ended its season with a school-record 32 victories and the lowest team ERA (2.75) since 1971.

Softball

Penn 3, Dartmouth 2: In Philadelphia, Alexis Borden (17-10) threw a complete game eight-hitter to lead Penn to its first Ivy League title since 1981. Borden fanned eight and walked two. Kristen Rumley (22-9) suffered the mound loss for Dartmouth (26-20). Kristen Rumley and Morgan McCalmon each had an RBI for the Big Green.

Men's lacrosse

Eastern Conn. State 9, Keene State 8: In Keene, the second-seeded Warriors defended their Little East Conference men's lacrosse championship. Keene State, which saw its eight game winning streak come to an end, completed its season with a 14-3 record. Senior Ian Hart of Richmond scored four goals for Keene State.

Women's lacrosse

Penn 10, Dartmouth 7: In Philadelphia, Penn captured the Ivy League title and an NCAA berth. Dartmouth (10-7) waited word on receiving a possible at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Liz Calby scored four times and senior Hana Bowers added three for the Big Green. Bowers set a tournament record with eight total goals.

Men's tennis

Colby-Sawyer 9, Rutgers-Camden 0: In Latham, N.Y., Colby-Sawyer (14-7) won the program's first North Atlantic Conference championship title match. The Chargers, behind No. 1 seeded player Nathan Taschereau of Goffstown, earned an NCAA Tournament berth. The pairings will be released today.

Women's tennis

Colby-Sawyer 9, Penn St. Berks 0: In Latham, N.Y., the Chargers captured the North Eastern Athletic Conference championship match. The championship is the program's sixth overall for the Chargers (18-4), which is a school record for wins in a season. CSC earns an NCAA Tournament berth.
