Paul was a lanky, skinny kid who made a decision at the age of 14 that would change his life forever. He was offered a free one-week membership to a local gym. For the next three years he spent almost every day at that gym, developing his body into a 6' 4", 210 lb. contender and winning several bodybuilding competitions including the title of Teen Mr. New Hampshire at the age of 19.
He was coached initially by former wrestler Ted Arcidi and he soon enrolled at Walter "Killer" Kowalski's Pro Wrestling School in Malden, MA. He trained four days a week under his tutelage. Levesque began his professional wrestling career in 1994 with World Championship Wrestling using the names Terra Ryzing and Jean-Paul Levesque. By 1995, he had joined the World Wrestling Federation where he began to develop the character of the wealthy sophisticate Hunter Hearst Helmsley, which was later shortened to Triple H.
He began to win championships, as he created different stables (or storylines involving other wrestlers) including D-Generation X, a group of rebels who acted out, doing and saying what they pleased. The group included Chyna, Rick Rude and Shawn Michaels. Though they disbanded in 2002, they reunited twice more as a duo of Triple H and Shawn Michaels, the last time in March 2010 just before Michaels' retirement. They also came together for one night only, in 2010 at a Tribute for the Troops event. He was also part of another stable from 2003-2005 called "Evolution" which included wrestlers Batista, Ric Flair and Randy Orton.
Over the years, Levesque has won 13 World Championships, King of the Ring in 1997, 2002's Royal Rumble, the second Grand Slam Championship winner, and the seventh Triple Crown Champion.
In 2001, during a tag team wrestling bout with Austin against Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit he sustained a severe injury, tearing his quadriceps muscle and causing it to come off the bone. The injury could have ended his wrestling career but Levesque had surgery, and though he missed 8 months in the ring, he returned in 2002 as a fan favorite. His wins and the success of his career would continue in the years to follow. He tore a bicep muscle in early 2010 and when he returned in October, he won his first match against Alberto Del Rio.
Levesque had previously dated another New Hampshire native and wrestler, Joanie Laurer (also known as Chyna). He met Stephanie after their breakup and married her three years later. They have two daughters together, Aurora Rose and Murphy Claire and reside in Greenwich, CT.
Triple H released a book, Making the Game: Triple H's Approach to becoming a professional body builder in 2004. He also appeared in the movie Blade: Trinity opposite Wesley Snipes.
