Name and date established: Newport 1962

Description: Prominent humanitarian poet and author was born and taught school in Guild section of Newport. Widowed mother of five, she edited "Godey's Lady Book"; composed poem that has become the limerick, "Mary Had a Little Lamb"; advocated proclamation of Thanksgiving national festival; and appealed constantly for higher education for women.

Location: Located on the north side of near the post office, in the Guild section of Newport.
