Origin:
Taken from portions of Hancock, Greenfield, Deering, and Francestown, the town was named in commemoration of the Battle of Bennington, fought on August 14-16, 1777, near Bennington, Vermont. Vermont's Bennington was named for Governor Benning Wentworth, who was responsible for naming many towns in New Hampshire and Vermont.
More about Bennington:
Over a distance of 1.2 miles, in the center of Bennington, the water level of the Contoocook River drops seventy feet. There is a long history of manufacturing here, where once five dams on the Contoocook River powered a variety of industries. Cutlery, woodenware and especially paper have been made here. Monadnock Paper Mills has carried on the manufacture of paper as this town's major product for more than a century.
