Origin:
Originally granted as Bretton Woods in 1772, for Bretton Hall, an estate of Governor John Wentworth. The town was renamed Carroll in 1832, for Charles Carroll of Maryland, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The town includes the villages of Fabyan's, Bretton Woods, and Twin Mountain. Bretton Woods is home to the Mount Washington Hotel, site of the July 1944 International Monetary Conference that resulted in the creation of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Nearby is Mount Washington's Cog Railway, the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway, in operation since 1869.

More about Carroll:
The Mount Washington Cog Railway is located on Route 302 in the village of Bretton Woods, which is a part of Carroll. The ever-changing surroundings, the magnificent views, the sights and sounds of unique steam locomotives in action, and some of the steepest Railway tracks in existence, combine to place the Mount Washington Cog Railway among the best of the world's great railway journeys. This is a trip that must be made to be fully appreciated!

Also found in Bretton Woods is the spectacular Mount Washington Hotel. This grand masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture was a two-year labor of love for 250 master craftsmen. Conceived by industrialist Joseph Stickney, this National Historic Landmark opened in 1902 and immediately became a favorite summer haunt for poets, presidents and princes.
