Origin:
Named in honor of Admiral Sir Charles Knowles of the British Navy, then Governor of Jamaica. Charlestown was originally the site of Number Four, the fourth in a line of forts on the Connecticut River border established as trading posts. A reproduction of Fort at Number Four is now a historical site. A historical marker commemorating the fort was erected in 1958 - the second such marker erected in the NH Historical Marker Program.
More about Charlestown:
Sixty-three buildings on Charlestown's Main Street are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including a fine example of a Gothic revival church, built in 1842. Perhaps the most important building in town though is the reproduction of Fort at Number Four, where military reinactments and musters occur frequently throughout the summer months.
