Origin:
A part of Sanbornton until 1869, this town was known as Sanbornton Bridge and Bridge Village. It was incorporated as Tilton, in honor of Nathaniel Tilton, whose grandson Charles was a prominent citizen in town. Nathaniel established an iron foundry and the area's first hotel, the Dexter House. Charles donated many statues to the town, including the Tilton Arch, and his estate is now part of the Tilton School. Tilton includes the village of Lochmere.
More about Tilton:
In 1849, Charles E. Tilton returned home from the Gold Rush where he acquired his fortune. He was determined to make his hometown the most beautiful showplace in all America. Some of the beautification projects that he accomplished were to pave the streets, build Town Hall, construct two bridges, and purchase many statues to give to the Town. Listed below are the statues that are intact and still call Tilton home, unfortunately through the years several statues that once stood tall in Tilton were either destroyed or stolen. The statues include "Timetable Mabel", the "Soldiers Monument", "Chief Squantum", "Asia", and "Miss America".
